Our focus swung back to Rhode Island during this quarter as our efforts to upgrade Westerly
Station’s platforms reached a key milestone. Among the highlights:
The Westerly Station platform upgrade project was officially added to Rhode Island’s new FY 2026-35 State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP), making the project eligible to receive federal funding
The platform upgrades, as well as a turnback track enabling future Shore Line East trains to pull off the mainline to reverse direction at the end of their eastward journey, was also added to Rhode Island’s new Long-Range Transportation Plan (LRTP), “Moving Forward RI 2050”
The number of public comments in support of these Westerly rail infrastructure projects on both the STIP and LRTP was outstanding – this was one of the top four projects in the state in terms of public support (thank you if you sent in a comment!)
The Boston Globe, Providence Journal, and RI Current all mentioned the Westerly Station upgrades in their coverage of the STIP
On deck for Q4:
Gearing up to participate in RIDOT’s State Rail Plan update
Checking the Northeast Corridor Commission’s upcoming FY26-30 Capital Investment Plan (fingers crossed for a funding allocation this year!)
