Installing High Platforms at Westerly Station

Transportation Services

Westerly Station is served by Amtrak’s Northeast Regional intercity passenger rail service and the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA)’s Routes 95X, 204, and 301.

We are working hard to bring commuter rail to Westerly Station, but until that happens, the nearest Shore Line East station is New London Union Station, and the nearest MBTA station is Wickford Junction. Click here for the Shore Line East website and here for the MBTA site.

11:00am-7:00pm, Wednesday through Saturday
1:00pm-5:00pm, Sunday

Note that the station building does not have a ticket agent, and nearly all the interior space is occupied by the Artists Cooperative Gallery of Westerly. Restrooms and a few benches are available inside, but only during the hours listed above, when the ACGOW is open.

Parking

On-site: 42 spaces
Canal Street municipal lot: 118 spaces

Note that free, non-time-restricted on-street parking can be found along portions of Railroad Avenue and Friendship Street as well. Many passengers are dropped off at the station by friends or family, as there are two convenient drop-off loops on either side of the tracks.

Accessibility

Passengers with mobility impairments who wish to take the train to/from Westerly Station should call Amtrak in advance at 1-800-872-7245 to make a reservation. More information on this process can be found on Amtrak’s website here.

Westerly Station is an ADA-compliant, low-platform station. This means that level boarding is achieved via use of a wheelchair lift. If you make a reservation to use the lift, an Amtrak conductor will retrieve and operate it during the train’s station stop.

We have been advocating tirelessly for the installation of high-level platforms at Westerly Station so that passengers of all abilities can board any train, any time, unassisted. To that end, we expect to see mini-high platforms installed in mid-2029.
